How to Relieve Your Knee Pain Without Relying on a Brace and Meds to Get You Through the Week

If you have knee pain that is limiting your ability to stay active, I understand the temptation to just keep pressing on and hope it will go away on its own. You may even be giving in to the idea that it's just a product of being active, aging, or you had an injury when you were younger and this is the price you pay.

You're not alone.

As a matter of fact, helping active people eliminate knee pain so they can continue their activities is something we treat very often in our clinic in Winston Salem, NC.

A story I tend to hear both in and out of the clinic is: "I used to love __________ (activity), but...."

Far too many people are forced to give up their activities because there was too much pain to continue.

Here are a few possible reasons your pain is sticking around:

  • You've been told to rest and ice so the pain would go away, only to find that you became even stiffer and more painful afterwards.
  • Perhaps to doctor gave you pills, or even an injection, that provided temporary solutions at best, only for the pain to come back even worse than before.
  • You've tried conservative treatment before from a physical therapist or chiropractor and received no lasting results.
  • You've tried the YouTube and Google exercises, but nothing has taken your pain away
  • You've been told by a friend/family member/physician that pain is a part of aging, and that you need to accept it
  • You've found someone that can eliminate your pain with massage or body work, but the pain continues to come back after a few hours/days

The confusion of different promises to relieve your pain is overwhelming, both in the medical world and the internet, and when none of them work it can lead you to think that you must be a case that cannot be helped.

If I may, I would like to show you that you do NOT have to add yourself to the ranks of people who ultimately give up their favorite activity, simply because no one took the time to guide them through the process.

In my free tips report: The Ultimate Guide to Improving your Knee Issue, I discuss several of the secrets you are not being told that are keeping you from enjoying the active lifestyle you love.

"What Can I Do to Get Rid of My Pain Quickly?"

Here are a few things you can start with:

  • Make a decision to get help. Too many people want the easiest solution (hello, opioid epidemic) and aren't willing to put in the time and effort to get better. Making a decision to be seen by a physical therapist is the first and most effective step you can take.
  • Do the correct exercises. It may seem like obvious advice, but if you're anything like me, pain isn't always a deterrent from exercise. If you're doing an exercise that hurts, you need to do something different until your body has earned the right to perform that movement that produces pain. This is no time for pride and "pushing through it." You need to switch it up and have a movement expert correct your form and build you up to the point where you are able to return to that exercise without pain.
  • Don't stop moving. People often confuse being told to rest with complete immobilization. Unless you have been given specific instructions to not bear ANY weight on a joint, you need to move. Immobilization is the enemy of recovery. Find a comfortable way to continue moving without pain but with proper form.
  • Get real, hands-on, 1-on-1 care from a physical therapist. If you are dealing with pain with movement, a physical therapist is the best chance you have to continue your activities. Shelton Movement and Performance specializes in providing 100% individualized approaches and 1-on-1 care to keep you active, because it is the number 1 thing we see. If your pain is keeping you from participating in activities either in the gym, on the field, or wherever else you go, Shelton Movement and Performance is here to be your guide.
